Kimberly’s Side Hustle includes a Camera and Man’s Best Friend
How did you get started?
In 2010, I started my photography blog after noting on Twitter that I was surprised that there wasn’t a site that gave down to earth photography tips; a local marketing consultant replied that I should start that site; a few months later, I got did.
How long have you been doing this?
I’ve been blogging since 2009; Through the Lens premiered in December 2010. I have another blog
about my journey to become a professional blogger and I’m working on creating a new one about raising littermate puppies.
How do you make money (Hourly, By Project, Retainer or One Time Fee)?
I make money through affiliate commissions; whenever I talk about a camera, lens, camera bag, or a photography book, I link it to my affiliate’s store. I’m paid a commission when my readers click on the link to buy the product. I also do product reviews. My next blog will draw in advertising revenue from local businesses.
How do you get new clients?
Good search engine optimization and through social networking. My business is 100% online and it’s all about researching the keywords that are going to bring me to the top of Google when people conduct a search. It’s also important that I have a consistent and regular presence on social networking sites – I have a Facebook fan page, I’m on Twitter, Google Plus, and other sites – connecting with photographers, bloggers, and other people who are interested in what I say and how I say it.
When do you work on your side hustle?
On my commute to and from work, a couple hours a few days during the week and half the day on
Sundays. It’s important that I leave the computer off during the week, because I don’t want to neglect my family, so I boot up to check email or upload images.
Do you have tips or resources for a person who just started a side hustle or wants to start one?
Just do it; don’t talk about it, don’t worry about it, just do it. Don’t Keep your credit card in your wallet – it’s tempting to jump on every “opportunity” and to “invest” in your business. A lot of things can be done for free in the beginning, giving you the time to see if the business you’re starting is the right one for you.
