Starting off with pet photography, Kimberly combined her love for both photography and blogging to start her new side hustle.
How did you get started?
I started blogging in 2009 when I decided that I wanted to become a professional pet photographer. Someone told me that I needed to start blogging too; the pet photography dream faded away when I fell in love with blogging.
How long have you been doing this?
How do you earn money?
I make money through affiliate marketing (I promote products that I love), selling advertising space on my site, and social media consulting with bloggers and small businesses.
How do you get new clients?
I find new clients through social networking and PR. I spend most of my time writing, but my next task is promoting myself and my blog on social networking sites like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Google Plus, Stumble Upon and LinkedIn.
When do you work on your side hustle?
I work on my commute to and from work (I take the train, which is about an hour), in the evenings (although I try to limit this time so that I can be with my family), and on the weekends.
Do you have tips or resources for a person who just started a side hustle or wants to start one?
Treat it like a real business. Set business hours, create goals, and write elevator pitch. The elevator pitch is not only your quick explanation of what you do that you can share with someone on an elevator ride, it’s also a way to keep you focused and on track.
In my experience, online businesses present so many opportunities to make money that it’s easy to get distracted. I come up with ideas daily, but they’ll take me away from my goals and because I have limited time, it’s important that I remain focused.
