Many jobs these days are unadvertised. This means that they are not in the classifieds. You won’t see them on Craigslist or on Monster. How do you land these positions? You have to network. One good way to do this is online. Your online presence can either help or hinder your efforts at landing a good job. Your online presence should reinforce the fact that you are an expert at what you do. Read on for more ways your online presence can help you find a job.
Where should you build your online presence?
If you know what industry you want to work in, you should build an online presence wherever the people that recruit for your industry hang out. If that’s Facebook, then be on Facebook. If that’s Twitter, then be on Twitter. If that’s LinkedIn, then be there. It’s pointless to have an awesome social media profile that no one in your industry will see. It’s also important to have your own website that you control. Yes this means you will have to pay for web hosting and a domain name. This is important because you need somewhere to show off your work in case the social media site you are using ceases to exist or loses popularity.
What should you put on your profile?
Your profile should show potential employers who you are. Don’t go too crazy with the photos. You want a happy medium between business and fun. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want to appear on the evening news. Even if you set your photos to “private”, they could still be accessed by potential employers. Just be safe. If what you’re about to post doesn’t make future employers feel 100% confident in your abilities, don’t post it.
Your online presence is a vitally important ingredient in your job hunt. Employers will Google your name. You want to make sure that they only find positive information that proves what a valuable addition you will be to the company.
